One of the most important and influential events in my life happened when I was 16. I spent a year studying in Nykoebing Falster, Denmark. I would never be the same.
I left my home a typical arrogant American teenager thinking that I would feel proud to share my culture but not really considering what I would get in return. I learned so much that year. Danish culture helped shape my values and worldview. I returned to the US wanting to make my home and my country a better place.
My year abroad affects me still today — over 20 years later. Now I want our country to be a better place for my daughter. I also hope that one day she gets the opportunity to study abroad just like I did.
